Mijas is a town and municipality in southern Spain, in the province of Málaga, which is part of the autonomous community of Andalusia. It is located on the southern coast of Spain, just 10 km from Fuengirola and 12 km from Marbella. Mijas belongs to the Costa del Sol Occidental region. To fully understand the history of Mijas one must first understand the history of the town. Located on a hill overlooking the coast, Mijas has been inhabited since pre-history. It was founded by the Phoenicians and later conquered by Carthage and Rome. Under Roman rule it became a prosperous town, with large villas built there by wealthy Romans. The abundance of clay in Mijas led to its development as a pottery center during this time.
Like other cities in the Iberian Peninsula, Mijas was occupied during the Middle Ages by Muslim armies led by Tariq ibn Ziyad in 714 AD. This period came to an end when Ferdinand III of Castile eradicated Islamic rule in Spain between 1230 and 1248.
A typical local saying is "Mijas no es un pueblo es una montaña," which translates as "Mijas is not a village, it's a mountain," to indicate how closely all the white buildings are stacked from top to bottom!
